To be eligible to join the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the veteran must meet three eligibility criteria:
1. United States citizenship
2. Honorable service in the Armed Forces of the United States (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard).
3. Service entitling the applicant to the award of a recognized campaign medal or as set forth in the Congressional Charter and/or By-Laws. (Entitlement to a campaign medal should be shown on separation papers of the individual, currently the DD 214) (Persons still on active duty must submit a statement signed by their Commanding Officer or Personnel Officer certifying to their having earned a campaign medal.)
